Why this stop matters

North Platte is the home of Bailey Yard, the largest rail classification yard in the world: about eight miles long, more than 300 miles of track, roughly 14,000 cars handled per day. The Golden Spike Tower and Visitor Center overlooks the operation. A steam stop here juxtaposes the era 4014 was built for with the modern freight scale that replaced it.
