Why this stop matters
Buffalo was the eastern lakeshore terminus where Erie Canal traffic, lake steamers, and at least seven railroads met during the steam era. The New York Central, Lehigh Valley, Erie, Lackawanna, and Pennsylvania all called here. As an industrial city built around grain elevators and steel mills, it was a heavy-steam town until dieselization arrived in earnest in the 1950s.
