Why this stop matters
Reading gave its name to one of America's great anthracite railroads. The Philadelphia & Reading was chartered in 1833 and completed in 1842, hauling coal down the Schuylkill from the Pottsville fields to Philadelphia; by the 1870s, under Franklin Gowen, it controlled a commanding share of the nation's hard-coal reserves and ranked among the largest corporations in the world — the same Reading Railroad that later lent its name to a corner of the Monopoly board.
The Reading's freight lines passed into Conrail in 1976, but the name lives on with the regional Reading & Northern, which works the old Outer Station grounds where 4014 makes its stop.
