Why this stop matters
Struthers lies in the heart of the Mahoning Valley, the string of mill towns between Youngstown and the Pennsylvania line that formed one of the country's great steel-producing districts. For most of the twentieth century the valley's furnaces and rolling mills were laced with railroad track — trunk lines hauling ore, coal, and finished steel, and fleets of specialized in-plant locomotives moving ladles of molten iron between the works.
The mills that defined Struthers largely closed in the late 1970s, but the main line through town — once Pennsylvania Railroad, now Norfolk Southern — still carries the freight, and local groups preserve the valley's steel-railroading heritage.
