What’s happening at this stop

This is a brief whistle-stop, not a display: 4014 is scheduled to pause near Oak and Main Streets in Continental in late morning for about half an hour on its westbound run toward Indiana. There is no organized viewing area, no ticketing, and no cab or up-close access — it is a chance to watch the locomotive at a crossing, not to walk up to it. Times can shift with the day's operations.

Why this stop matters

Continental was a creation of the narrow-gauge era. Platted as Maurice City in June 1886 for the family of A. V. Rice, it grew up beside the Clover Leaf Route — a slim three-foot line reaching from Toledo toward St. Louis, which took the Clover Leaf name the very month the townsite was filed. The town adopted the name Continental in 1899.

The Clover Leaf was absorbed into the Nickel Plate Road in 1923 and, through it, eventually into Norfolk Southern. Much of the old main across the county has since been pulled up, but it was the rails that made the town rather than the other way around.
