Why this stop matters
South Holland began in 1846 as a colony of farmers from the Dutch province of South Holland, who worked the low ground along the Little Calumet and called it de Laage Prairie before the American name took hold in 1870. What fixed the settlement on the map was the Illinois Central, which laid its tracks through in 1853; the Panhandle and the Grand Trunk followed, and the truck farms grew famous enough that the town called itself the onion-set capital of the world.
