Why this stop matters

Hermann, a Missouri River town settled by German immigrants, lies on the line that carried the first fatal railroad-bridge disaster in American history. On November 1, 1855, an inaugural excursion train of the Pacific Railroad of Missouri — running west from St. Louis toward Jefferson City — broke through an unfinished bridge over the Gasconade River just west of Hermann, killing more than two dozen people. The town's hotel served as a hospital and morgue for the survivors.

That Pacific Railroad became the Missouri Pacific and, in 1982, part of Union Pacific — so 4014 now runs home rails as it follows the Missouri River route through Hermann toward Jefferson City and Kansas City.
