What’s happening at this stop

This is a brief whistle-stop, not a display: 4014 is scheduled to pause at the Main St. crossing in Grainfield around midday for about half an hour on its way across the high plains of western Kansas. There is no organized viewing area, no ticketing, and no cab or up-close access — it is a chance to watch the locomotive at a crossing, not to walk up to it. Times can shift with the day's operations.

Why this stop matters

Grainfield is one of the string of western-Kansas towns the Kansas Pacific called into being as it built toward Denver. The railroad platted the townsite in 1879 and opened a depot the same year; the line's arrival brought settlers and made the town a shipping point for the surrounding wheat country.

When the Kansas Pacific was folded into the Union Pacific in 1880, Grainfield became a stop on UP's original Kansas City–Denver route — the home rails 4014 follows across the high plains.
