What’s happening at this stop

This is a brief whistle-stop, not a display: 4014 is scheduled to pause at the Young St. crossing in Kit Carson in mid-morning for about half an hour, shortly after crossing into Colorado on its climb toward Denver and Cheyenne. There is no organized viewing area, no ticketing, and no cab or up-close access — it is a chance to watch the locomotive at a crossing, not to walk up to it. Times can shift with the day's operations.

Why this stop matters

Kit Carson was, for a time in 1870, the end of track. As the Kansas Pacific pushed the last miles across the plains toward its meeting with the line being built east from Denver, Kit Carson served as railhead and a busy transfer point — offices of the overland mail moved here, and Texas cattle were driven up to be shipped east.

The Kansas Pacific became part of the Union Pacific in 1880. Its rails through Kit Carson still carry UP freight, and 4014 now runs them as it climbs the plains toward Denver and Cheyenne.
