Why this stop matters

Denver was a city Union Pacific pointedly bypassed in 1869 — the original Transcontinental ran through Cheyenne to the north — until local backers built the Denver Pacific spur up to UP's main line. The result was a model for how Western cities lobbied, financed, and laid track to keep themselves on the map after the great east-west routes had been chosen.
