What’s happening at this stop

There is no public viewing at this stop: 4014 is scheduled to arrive back at Union Pacific's Cheyenne steam shop in mid-afternoon on July 29, closing out the coast-to-coast tour. This is a working shop facility, not a display, and there is no organized public event, no ticketing, and no cab access at the shop itself.

The most realistic option is watching for the train along a public crossing somewhere on its final approach into Cheyenne before the scheduled 4 p.m. arrival — not at the shop, which is active, patrolled railroad property. As with any inbound move, timing can shift.

Why this stop matters

Cheyenne is the home shop of Union Pacific's heritage steam program. Number 4014 returned here in 2014 for a five-year restoration that included converting the locomotive from coal to oil firing, rebuilding the air-brake system, and replacing flues. It rolled out under its own power in 2019, in time for the 150th anniversary of the Transcontinental Railroad's completion at Promontory Summit. The Cheyenne shop floor is one of the few places in the world where Big Boy-class machinery is actively maintained.
