Why this stop matters

Philadelphia is where Pennsylvania Railroad — for decades the largest railroad in the world by revenue — was chartered in 1846 and headquartered at Broad Street Station. PRR's standardization of locomotive design and operating practice influenced every other US road, including the western lines that ran the Big Boys.

The Fourth of July stop lands in the city where the Declaration of Independence was signed, during the nation's 250th-anniversary year — about as charged a setting as a touring locomotive can have.
