Why this stop matters

Salina sits where the Smoky Hill Trail crossed the Kansas plains — a stagecoach and freight route that the Kansas Pacific (later folded into UP) paralleled in the late 1860s. Reaching Salina marked a stage in the race to Denver and one of the proving grounds for high-speed steam operation on tangent prairie track.
