This is an overnight pause, not a short whistle-stop: 4014 is scheduled to arrive at the Old Depot in Salina in early evening on July 23 and stay parked there overnight before continuing on the morning of July 24. There is no ticketing, no organized program, and no cab access, but because the train sits still for many hours, there is more time than at a typical half-hour stop to see it from the depot grounds and nearby public areas. Why this stop matters
Salina sits where the Smoky Hill Trail crossed the Kansas plains — a stagecoach and freight route that the Kansas Pacific (later folded into UP) paralleled in the late 1860s. Reaching Salina marked a stage in the race to Denver and one of the proving grounds for high-speed steam operation on tangent prairie track.
